The Cycling Federation of Azerbaijan is proud to announce that the UCI 2.1 Tour d’Azerbaidjan stage race returns again for its sixth edition in 2017, with the five-day race taking place between 3 and 7 May 2017, starting and finishing in the Azeri capital, Baku.
Since its inaugural edition back in 2012, then called the U23 Heydar Aliyev Anniversary Tour, the race evolved into the Tour d’Azerbaidjan from 2013, to the present day, with past winners including Markus Eibegger (AUT – 2016) Primož Roglič (SLO – 2015) and Ilnur Zakarin (2014 – RUS).
“After another successful year in 2016 we were able to continue building on the success of this race as it becomes a regular and recognized event in the UCI calendar,” said Sahib Alakbarov, head of the organizing committee and vice president of the Cycling Federation of Azerbaijan. “This race continues to help showcase sport in Azerbaijan and to shine a light on how beautiful a country we have surrounding us. We’re in the process of securing yet another international field for this year’s edition, setting us up for another exciting race. The success of this race is a result of the hard work of the Baku Cycling Project and we hope that the Tour d’Azerbaidjan will help to continue to grow the sport here in Azerbaijan and to inspire the next generation of Azeri champions.”
The General Secretary of the Federation, Farhad Aliyev, added: "We’re very pleased to once again be showcasing our country to the world and to bring international racing to the people of Azerbaijan for the sixth year in succession, proving the strength and stability of the race. The Cycling Federation of Azerbaijan will once again strive to ensure a well-organized event which can continue to attract viewers from around the globe. We’re proud to once again have a chance to shine.”
The race is proud to announce that this year the classification jerseys will be provided by Northwave, a new partner for the 2017 edition. The jerseys come from the Italian apparel company's Custom Project, exclusively dedicated to developing customized clothing. Northwave will provide the jerseys of the Overall Race Leader, as well as the King of the Mountains, Sprint Points Leader and Best Young Rider. The teams competing for the overall 2017 Tour d’Azerbaidjan champion’s title, come from over 10 different nations, with four Pro Continental teams already confirmed. The full line-up will be revealed in due course.
With uncertainty over other races in the International calendar, the Tour d'Azerbaidjan is pleased to once again form a major objective of many riders' race calendars, providing an exciting spectacle for all to see. The countdown is on until the flag drops on stage 1 on 3 May.
